Ron Fleming: Academic Writing

Democratization, Institutions and Elite Legacies:

Understanding the Limits of Institutional Analysis

Ron Fleming Graduate

If this piece weren’t a great example of academic writing, I wouldn’t be allowed to use this graphic with it.

Listen: If that title isn’t the most fetching bit of academic writing you’ve ever seen . . . if it doesn’t make you just ache to read more, then you have passed the test. You are hereby diagnosed as being free and clear of that unnamed ailment that afflicts everyone who has been immersed in the esoterica of grad school for just a little bit too long.

This paper is a little old (just a little), but it’s one of the best examples I have of my academic writing that isn’t twice as long. It’s actually a prelude to a longer piece I wrote for a class on Russian politics, tailored for the purpose of satisfying a research design proposal in another class. It’s here to demonstrate that I can adapt my style and tone for different purposes and different audiences.
